PRIMARY CARE FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH
As a competitive team of leading providers in healthcare services, our mission is to provide affordable, quality medical services to all members of the community.
As a supporter of the community’s well-being, healthcare professionals at Total Vitality Medical Group practice functional medicine in addition to delivering primary healthcare services. Functional medicine is a preventive approach that addresses the risks and concerns leading to health issues and not just the mere treatment of existing health problems.
In order to practice functional medicine or preventive medicine, we use a patient-centered approach instead of the management of an isolated set of symptoms. Our providers spend a reasonable amount of time with patients and learn about their lifestyle habits, environmental and unique genetic background and other demographical parameters that affect their health and wellness in the long term.
By using a functional approach, we are able to help each patient reach optimal health.

Chronic Illness Care
The only thing worse than being ill is being chronically ill. When you don’t feel your best (and sometimes feel your worst) day after day, it can definitely take its toll on you.
What is a chronic illness?
A chronic illness is a condition that is longer in term (usually 3 months or more) that cannot necessarily be cured. Its symptoms may be controlled to a certain point, but generally speaking, it is something that a person deals with for quite some time, if not the rest of their lives.
Some examples of chronic illnesses include:
- Heart Disease
How is treatment of a chronic illness different than treatment for other illnesses?
Some conditions can be treated and put in remission (such as cancer and certain types of diabetes), but others are potentially lifelong and can only be managed (like allergies and asthma). Therefore, the type of doctoring required for each one depends on the individual illness itself.
Although some conditions can be dealt with directly via medical intervention (such as chemo for cancer or inhalers for asthma), it is also important to realize that there are things you can do on your own to relieve some of the symptoms. For instance, if you are overweight, losing some of the excess pounds can help you ease your asthma issues or reduce your amount of problems with your diabetes.
The doctors and staff at Total Vitality Medical Group take a lifestyle approach when it comes to dealing with chronic illnesses. We’ll provide you any medical relief we can, but we’ll also teach you what you can do to relieve the symptoms on your own too.
We offer testing and treatment options for allergies, diabetes, asthma and more in all six of our locations in (Brandon, Clearwater,Port Richey,Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Sun City ). Don’t spend one more day struggling with a chronic illness. Call today and make an appointment so that you can start to feel better and actually live life.

Common Cold Symptoms and Treatment
When you have a cold, your normal everyday activities can seem like impossible feats to complete. You want nothing more than to stay in bed, wishing that you could go to sleep and just wake up healthy and happy again. Then you grab another tissue and are quickly brought back to the reality that it isn’t quite that easy.
What causes you to catch a cold?
The answer to this actually lies in the question. You catch a cold from someone else who has it. It can be via personal contact, like when you shake hands or give someone a kiss, but it can also be from something that they’ve touched, like door handles or shopping carts. It can also be spread through the air, such as when someone sneezes or coughs.
The cold virus makes its way into your nose or throat and settles in. Sometimes you’re able to beat it, especially if it is a virus you’ve had before, but sometimes you’re not, which leaves you wishing for better days.
How do you know if it is a cold versus the flu?
If you have a cold, you normally suffer from an itchy or irritated throat, watery eyes, and a runny nose. It is something that you feel primarily in your head and chest area. The flu, on the other hand, generally brings about body aches and fever and you feel it throughout your entire body.
How can you avoid a cold?
The best way to not catch a cold is to avoid people that have them. However, that isn’t always easy to do. Therefore, you’ll want to make sure you wash your hands frequently to keep the cold virus away and, because it generally takes hold in your nose and throat, you’ll also have an easier time staying healthy if you keep your hands away from your face.
Total Vitality Medical Group can help you ease the symptoms of your cold, as well as soothe any other infection or virus correlated with conditions such as coughs, ear infections, fevers and more. We also offer wellness physicals to make sure you get and stay healthy, so make an appointment today!
Some allergies are uncomfortable to endure, some are debilitating and others are downright deadly. The important thing to know is which one(s) you have – and understanding that they can change over time.
What types of things might you be allergic to?
There are four categories of allergies. They are food, animals, seasonal and a catch all category that includes everything else. Within the four, here are some of the more common items that you may be allergic to:
- Food – nuts, milk, wheat, shellfish and soy
- Animals – cats and dog dander
- Seasonal – pollen and certain trees, shrubs or flowers
- Everything else – bee stings, poison ivy or oak, mold, certain drugs (like sulfa or penicillin), etc.
It is important to realize that you can develop allergies over time. So, while you might not be allergic to bees today, for instance, you could suffer from an allergic reaction to them the next time you are stung.
What are the most common allergy symptoms?
If you are slightly allergic to something, you may experience symptoms such as itchy, watery eyes and a runny or stuffy nasal passage. You may also notice a cough or sore throat, and you might feel more tired than usual.
However, if your allergy is severe, exposure to your allergen may cause anaphylactic shock within seconds or minutes which causes your airway to start to constrict, your blood pressure to drop and you may feel nauseous or vomit. In these cases, medical intervention should be sought as soon as possible (after using an epinephrine auto-injector first if you have one).
It is worth noting that you may have intolerance to a substance versus an allergy, which means that you may feel a reaction only if you are overexposed to the toxin.
How can you find out for sure if you are allergic?
Because a lot of allergy symptoms mimic cold symptoms, it is easy to mistake them for something else. Therefore, the best way to know for sure is to have allergy testing conducted by a medical professional.
At Total Vitality Medical Group, we not only test for allergies, but we treat them too. Come in to any one of our six locations (Brandon, Clearwater,Port Richey,Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Sun City ) and we’ll help you discover what you are allergic to and help you treat it.
We also have other testing and treatment options for conditions such as asthma, diabetes, cholesterol and more, so set up your screening today. We even offer Wellness physicals that cover all of these types of issues and much more, so be sure to call today!
When you can’t breathe easily, everything else in life feels pretty irrelevant. Whether you are young or old, male or female, you may find that having asthma may make it more difficult to live an active lifestyle, but follow a proper treatment plan and it doesn’t have to be impossible.
What is asthma?
A person who suffers from asthma has airways that are sensitive, inflamed and constricted. This makes it hard to breathe in certain situations, such as when there is contact with a trigger (like dust or fumes) or when breathing is labored, like when exercising.
What are the symptoms?
These are some of the most common symptoms of asthma:
- Coughing and wheezing
- Fast or labored breathing
- Chest tightness or shortness of breath
- Fatigue and general overall weakness
Are there any risk factors that might increase the chance that you’ll get asthma?
Certain factors may raise your risk of asthma; these include:
- A family history of asthma
- Age (usually asthma is diagnosed before a person is 40 years of age and some estimates suggest that as many as 10% of children have this chronic condition)
Is asthma deadly?
In some cases, an asthma attack can turn deadly. So, if you attempt to deal with your asthma and cannot get relief, medical intervention should be sought immediately to help you breathe easily again.
How do you test for asthma?
There are a few different tests that can be performed to determine if you or your child has asthma, including a lung function test and chest x-rays. If there are additional concerns, such as allergies or sinusitis that may be contributing to your difficulty breathing, tests may be performed for those as well.
Whether you suspect that you have asthma, or you know by past diagnosis, Total Vitality Medical Group can help you deal with it in a way that allows you to enjoy life as much as possible.

When your blood sugar levels aren’t just right, you don’t feel your best. And if they get too far out of whack, you may be in clear medical danger. Therefore, learning how to manage your diabetes is the key to living a long and healthful life.
What is diabetes?
Diabetes is diagnosed when your body produces either insufficient amounts of insulin (such as you find in type 2 diabetes) or none at all (which is type 1 diabetes, commonly referred to as juvenile diabetes). Insulin is required to keep your blood sugar levels stable and your body healthy and strong.
How do you know if you have it?
You can’t be absolutely sure you have diabetes until you’re diagnosed it by a doctor. However, there are a few symptoms that may signal that your blood sugar levels aren’t where they should be. (You’ll want to pay attention to these symptoms because the sooner you catch any blood glucose problems, the better chance you have a full recovery.)
Common signs of diabetes include: extreme thirst and/or hunger, excessive urination, feeling tired a lot, blurry eyesight, and bruises that take longer than normal to heal. If you are losing weight unexplainably, it may be a sign of type 1 diabetes and tingling or a numb feeling in your extremities could be a sign of type 2 diabetes.
Can you prevent diabetes?
Because type 2 diabetes is largely lifestyle related, you can lower your risk of it by eating healthy foods, watching your sugar intake, getting regular physical exercise and staying at a weight that is healthy for your height.
If you have any blood sugar concerns or have already been diagnosed as a diabetic and are just looking for a doctor who understands and is committed to your treatment, Total Vitality Medical Group would like to help. You can come to any one of our convenient locations (Brandon, Clearwater,Port Richey,Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Sun City to discuss all of your issues and options.
We also help with other chronic illnesses such as allergies, asthma and hypertension. Or, if you’d like to catch any problems before they start, a Wellness exam may be what you need to ward them off. Whatever your health and wellness status, we’re here for you!
High Blood Pressure
Not only does your blood have to pump through your body in order for you to survive, but it has to do it at a certain rate. If it goes too fast or too slow, you may end up with high or low blood pressure. Of course, the ideal blood pressure reading is 120/80, but that isn’t always what you get – which can mean trouble for you.
What is high blood pressure?
You’ve likely heard of high blood pressure (which is defined as several blood pressure readings of 140/90 or higher) because it is the most common of the cardiovascular diseases, but it is sometimes called hypertension too. It occurs when your blood flows too rapidly (too fast) or too forcefully (like when your arteries are narrowed) and can create very serious health issues like stroke and heart attack.
What is low blood pressure?
When your heart doesn’t pump hard enough or fast enough, you may be diagnosed with low blood pressure (also called hypotension). Generally, your blood pressure readings have to be 90/60 or lower to fit into this category and it can be caused by dehydration, pregnancy, heart problems, infection, major blood loss and more.
How do you know if your blood pressure is off?
Although a lot of the time you cannot feel when your blood pressure is not where it should be, so you can purchase an over the counter cuff if you want to keep an eye on it. There are also some physical signs to watch for too.
If you experience major headaches, have vision issues, feel confused, are tired a lot, have a hard time breathing, feel a pounding in your chest, notice an irregular heartbeat or see blood in your urine, you may have high blood pressure. Low blood pressure presents slightly different symptoms, such as feeling light-headed, fainting, being nauseous, having cold and clammy skin, feeling depressed and being extremely thirsty.
What can you do if your blood pressure isn’t normal?
Sometimes blood pressure can be stabilized with relatively minor lifestyle changes and other times it requires prescription medications to get and stay out of the danger zone.
At Total Vitality Medical Group we are here to help you isolate the cause of your blood pressure issues and help you treat it. We also have the ability to deal with other potentially dangerous health conditions such as high cholesterol, diabetes, asthma and more.
Although your blood needs some cholesterol to help it make cells, get too much and you risk clogging your arteries and running into some major medical issues – issues that can do a lot of harm and may have been completely preventable.
What is so bad about having high cholesterol?
If you’ve been diagnosed with high cholesterol (240 or above), it means that a wax-like substance is building up in your arteries, making it hard for the blood to pass through. When you limit blood flow to your heart, you face a heart attack. Limit it to your brain and you may have a stroke. Both of these conditions are potentially fatal and can do a lot of damage even if you survive.
Is high cholesterol inherited or something you get based on lifestyle?
Actually, it can be both. Some people have a difficult time regulating their cholesterol because of genetics, but most cholesterol issues come back to lifestyle choices. If you smoke, are overweight, don’t engage in physical exercise, have high blood pressure or diabetes, you have a higher risk of cholesterol related issues.
How do you know if you have high cholesterol?
This is one of those conditions that doesn’t necessarily come with a warning system. Usually, you don’t know you have it until a blood test tells you so or you have a heart attack or stroke and cholesterol is found to be a factor.
That is why getting your annual Wellness physical is so important. It can help discover a problem before it turns into a life threatening condition that cannot be treated.
How is high cholesterol treated?
Some elevated cholesterol issues can be treated by making lifestyle changes, such as eating healthier and getting more active. However, there are also prescription drugs available, the most common being statins.
At Total Vitality Medical Group, we conduct Wellness physicals and onsite blood draws to help you determine if your cholesterol is of concern to your health. If it is found to be an issue, we can teach you what you need to know to live a healthy lifestyle and prescribe other forms of treatment if necessary.
You may hear the word hypertension and think that it doesn’t sound too scary. However, hypertension is just another way of saying “high blood pressure” so that should be enough to get your attention and help you realize that this is not something you should ignore.
What is hypertension?
Hypertension involves calculating two factors: how much blood your heart pumps and how easily the blood flows through your arteries. If your blood pressure has an issue with either of these factors and is higher than 140/90 continuously over time, then you will probably be diagnosed with hypertension.
What causes it?
In some cases, there is no actual cause of hypertension but it can be brought on by other medical conditions such as tumors on your adrenal glands and kidney issues. Certain prescription medications can also create hypertension (like oral birth control and decongestants), as do some illegal drugs (such as cocaine).
How do you know if you have hypertension?
Like cholesterol, you can have hypertension and not even realize it which puts you at risk of heart attacks and strokes. (This is why an annual Wellness physical is so important.) Some people with hypertension do have symptoms like dizziness and nosebleeds, but these often appear after having this condition for years – when it is more difficult to treat.
What are the risk factors for hypertension?
Hypertension is more common in:
- Older people versus younger
- Blacks versus whites
- Overweight individuals versus normal weight
- Inactive folks versus exercisers
- Smokers and drinkers versus those who
Other factors that influence your blood pressure include getting too much salt in your diet, too little potassium and vitamin D, and experiencing high levels of stress. Additionally, high cholesterol and diabetes can contribute to hypertension as well.
Make an appointment today and come in and see one of our doctors at Total Vitality Medical Group to ensure that your blood pressure is in a healthy range. If it is running a little too high, we can help you find ways to lower it both through lifestyle and medication if necessary.
We can also make sure your cholesterol levels are okay and that you aren’t having any blood sugar issues that could bring about hypertension issues. Schedule a Wellness physical at one of our four locations (Brandon, Clearwater,Port Richey,Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Sun City ) and let’s make sure there are no medical concerns existing silently in your body.
